Just the other day I saw a big report on BBC News about Spotify, the online music service. The awareness of the service seems to be growing by the day, but now it has suffered a setback.
As Spotify put it themselves “Last week we were alerted to a group that managed to compromise our protocols”, IE we’ve been hacked!
The users at highest risk are those who signed up before the 19th of December 2008, data at risk includes; emails, birthdates, post codes and billing receipts, however their is no issue with credit cards which is a massive plus.
What Have You Got To Do?
If you registered after 19th December 2008 then you should be ok, if before that then Spotify advise you to change your password. I don’t have an account their, but if I did I would change my password regardless of when I signed up!
What Next?
This is very bad PR for Spotify and no doubt it will mean distrust amongst some existing members, and may have put a fair amount of people off signing up. But long-term I don’t think it will have a noticeable effect on the service. But if this happens again, well it could seriously harm the success of Spotify.
