Smart Meters from the Govt – When and at what Cost?

All HousesSmart Meters are going to help homes across Britain reduce their energy consumption which will cut household bills and lower the nations CO2 emissions by up to 2.6m tonnes!

When Will This Happen?
At the moment it looks like these high-tech devices will be installed by the year 2020. However the ERA (Energy Retail Association) which represents the largest of the energy suppliers has said “time is of the essence” and this is an opportunity to accelerate plans for the Governments low carbon economy push.

At What Cost Will It Happen?
According to Channel 4 households will be expected to stump up for the devices, the total cost is expected to be between £10bn and £20bn! That is a large range in the potential cost so at the moment it seems unclear what the price will be, although long-term it appears to be a wise investment (do the Govt do those?).

More Information
At the end of October 2009 we will hear more from the UK officials in charge so hopefully all will become somewhat clearer.
