Project Canvas By The BBC Due Christmas 2010 – Q&A

BBCIt currently goes by the name of Project Canvas, it is a project led by the BBC. Some like to call it “The iPlayer in hardware” (image left is current BBC iPlayer).

What Is It?
It is a new broadcasting platform, web-based TV but without a computer!

How Will It Work?
BBC Trust and the public service broadcasters are working with ISPs to try and create a ‘standard’ for televisions. So you will be able to enjoy services such as the BBC iPlayer, 4OD and ITV Player without using your PC or Mac. The website T3 put it nicely:

If you think of Project Canvas as a cross between iPlayer, Freeview, your digital recorder and a smartphone, but all on your TV, you should be about there.

When Is It Due?
Christmas 2010, and hopefully it won’t be delayed as it is a genuinely exciting project. Of course, with all the focus on the project and Ofcom keeping a watch on progress we could see delays.

What Will Happen To Other Services?
Virgin and Sky will no doubt be keeping a very close eye on proceedings and working out how they can combat it. Given the nature of their businesses I don’t see how they could jump on the bandwagon or replicate it so maybe they will start adding increased value to their services for subscribers. It’s big business so we will have to wait and see what action they take.
