The monitor is an underrated and largely ignored piece of computing kit. People are always talking about graphic cards, processors, RAM, and even mice get more press than the trusted monitor.
Paying attention to this silent hero however, may well pay dividends on your computing experience. Here are some of the best PC monitors available for your consideration.
LG W2486L – £219.97
This classy offering from LG features a backlit screen, and a selection of various modes: cinema being one that caught the eye. It offers an amazing 2000000:1 contrast ratio, full 1080p HD, and is one of the slimmest monitors you could get you hands on. It is more than capable of handling the highest spec graphic cards.
Samsung Syncmaster 2333HD – £183.00
This stylish offering from Samsung is a great all-rounder. Equipped with two HDMI slots and a built in TV tuner, the Syncmaster can do just about all the jobs a monitor can do. Does not have the clarity of LG’s offering, but is perfect if you need a monitor to be all things to all people, of if you are a blu-ray freak and want something to watch them on.
Samsung Syncmaster P2250 – £195.87
This offering is not quite up to speed as its bigger brother the 2333HD, and lacks many of the features. There is no HDMI socket for example, but this is justly reflected in the price. As a monitor for standard use, there is nothing wrong with Samsung’s offering, and with all things its Samsung, has a unique style.
ViewSonic VX2433wm – £176.18
Despite reports of blurred text, and a less than accurate colour formatting, generally the reviews are favourable for the cheapest monitor in our list. It has a dazzling array of features, and though ViewSonic’s monitor offers no thrills, it is good value for money. If on a tight budget and want features such as HDMI connection, it is ideal.
When buying a monitor try and assess what usage you want out of it. If you are an avid gamer, you need not only to look at specifications such as contrast ratio and size, but how fast it can move the pixels, i.e. what the input lag is. The lower the better for games. Similarly, if you want a monitor for business use, do you really need an HDMI connection?
As with all technology you should shop around, as the above list is a small sample of what is a big market.
