Since its launch in November 2008 as the definitive rival to the iPhone, the Blackberry Storm has been dogged by controversy. Critics have included technophile Stephen Fry, who famously slated it on Twitter as “shockingly bad”.
Problems have included crashes, freezes and volume issues.
Now, amid rumours that Blackberry Storm 2 will be unleashed this autumn, allegedly complete with Wi-Fi, makers RIM are upgrading the firmware of the original incarnation well in advance. It (proper name: Update 4.7.0.141) is available to download now by desktop, visit http://devicehelp.vodafone.co.uk/storm/.
The update is set to put right the bugs which have plagued the Blackberry Storm, along with some fresh features, including what one reviewer described as ‘a helping of cheap music.’
Other plans for the upgrading include a more responsive camera, which will be able to take higher resolution pictures than are possible now. A greater number of file types will be supported through multimedia playback, and the all new Storm is to increase its reliability of streaming music as well.
Call sound quality is also in line for improvement, and the upgrade also aims to clear up problems some users experienced when operating the Storm with a headset.
The idea is also to make the messaging application crash much less frequently. A cursor will now be visible as users type. Touchscreen responsiveness is also to benefit from the upgrade, and it will now be possible to lock the screen to save power.
As if all that wasn’t enough, unlimited music downloads for a fiver will be up for grabs from Vodafone Live.
RIM has set itself a tall order in appeasing Storm’s critics while winning over new customers. Only time will tell if it succeeds.

i like tis phone. but there is no chinese can not sms to my chinese friend.
Will Blackberry make the Storm a true touch screen instead of a push contact screen. The Palm pre is a true touch screen. The LG EnV touch is a true touch screen. If Blackberry is able to design the Storm with a true Touch screen it will out do the Apple I-phone.
