New Devices to Become Medical Staples?

American company Ethicon Endo-Surgery (EES) has launched two surgical staplers aimed at boosting efficiency and compression during open surgery.

These two devices are the newest arrivals in the surgical instruments specialists’ range of colorectal surgery equipment. Surgeons were heavily involved in the design of both staplers, which are for use in colorectal, bariatric and general procedures.

Surgery StaplerThe Ethicon Endo-Surgery Linear Cutter 55/75, designed with new staple technology and variable staple heights in a single cartridge, offers improved haemostasis for patients and greater efficiency for nurses and health managers as well as surgeons.

At the same time, the Ethicon Endo-Surgery Intraluminal Stapler (ILS), has been fashioned with a pioneering tissue compression scale, to give surgeons more control and flexibility to better target each individual patient’s needs.

The new scale for tissue compression, or measurement of tissue density, is likely to generate particular interest. Compression must be known before stapling to provide an accurate staple line, with proper staple formation. Optimal compression varies from patient to patient, and is affected by many different factors.

Ethicon Endo-Surgery says: “The importance of stapling is a vital aspect of surgery. Several variables must be taken into account – sometimes during the procedure itself – to prevent post-surgical complications.

“Advancements in stapling technology which secure tissue better and allow surgeons to make adjustments during the procedure are a welcome improvement.”

The new products are showcased this month at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), in Minneapolis.
