BMW has launched a string of improvements to its 3 series range, offering greater power and torque while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The BMW 320d coupé and convertible models (photos at bottom of page) feature a new version of the familiar four-cylinder diesel engine, which now delivers 184hp (up 7hp) and 380Nm of torque (up 30Nm).
Consumptions & Emissions Improved
With the 335i derivative, although power and torque remain the same at 306hp and 400Nm, consumption and emissions have been reduced. This was possible on this engine by combining a single turbocharger with Valvetronic variable valve management and high precision direct injection for the first time. The coupé’s fuel consumption is 8% lower at 33.6mpg, while CO² output drops by more than 10% to 196g/km.
At the same time, the new BMW 320d saloon is being billed as the cleanest, most efficient BMW ever thanks to the refining of the internal combustion engine. At 109g/km, it is the first premium car with CO² emissions under 110g/km, and ekes out 68.9mpg from a gallon of fuel on the combined cycle.
The challenge for BMW’s engineers was to minimise engine noise and restore comfort to allow lower revs. They achieved this by deploying centrifugal pendulum absorbers within the two mass flywheel to compensate for the rotational lack of balance at lower speeds. With this problem solved they could choose a longer final drive ratio and a gearshift indicator that encourages earlier up-shifts. These technologies allow drivers to spend more time in a higher gear with lower engine speed, bringing down fuel consumption.
Chassis & Wheel Changes
Equally, the chassis ride height has been lowered by 15mm, unique 16-inch ‘aero’ wheels are standard fitment and these are equipped with tyres with a lower rolling resistance, all improving aerodynamics and reduce drag.
The 320d, 325d, 335i and 335d variants of the 3 Series saloon and touring also receive enhancements in the engine bay.
Finally the BMW 335i saloon and touring featuring a new single turbocharged 3.0-litre engine sees improvements in fuel consumption, emissions and VED rates.
The new models will be available in the UK from March 2010. Here are some more photos.
