Bluetooth 3.0: Post-Easter Cracker Or A Rotten Egg?

Bluetooth LogoBluetooth may be a universal technology but, some say it is not nearly widely enough used. The impending 3.0 specification, however, could change all that almost overnight.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the not-for-profit trade association, has said Bluetooth v3 will be officially launched on 21 April. Although no specific figures are available about the latest edition, the official hype leaves no doubt that this is a piece of kit big on ambitions and promises.

“The speed of Bluetooth 3.0 will expand home entertainment and CE use cases in these under-penetrated markets,” claims an official statement. “It will not be possible to transfer an entire music library, a complete DVD, a vacation’s worth of photos, all within seconds at the touch of a button and wirelessly. And a new feature called Enhanced Power Control reduces the incidence of disconnects caused by movement.”

It adds: “A generic alternate MAC/PHY (AMP) will enable Bluetooth profiles to take advantage of 802.11 speeds. The 802.11 Protocol Adaption Layer (PAL) will allow the Generic AMP feature to be used with an 802.11 radio.”

Along with all this is the added potential for mass storage related products like the Leyio PSD, whic lets users exchange digital content away from their computer, which also has a launch in April.

One thing that is certain is that Bluetooth 3.0 developments will be keenly followed – if only to see if it can give WiFi a run for its money. And already cyberspace is humming with sceptics – some say Bluetooth 3.0 will be forgotten about by the time the last of the Easter chocolate has gone. Time will tell.
